Rome 1969. Two Englishmen, one gay (Robert) and one straight (Marcus), are holidaying separately in the Eternal City. Their paths cross dramatically late one evening, when Marcus, ever the Good Samaritan, rescues the reckless Robert from a mugging. They suddenly realise that they were at primary school together, and Robert insists on giving Marcus the address of the appartment where he is staying.

Marcus has no intention of contacting Robert. He and his wife have been going through a "sticky patch" and he has brought her to Rome for a second honeymoon. It is not to be, however. He has spent the first day at a Smaritans International convention, and when he returns to the apartment they have rented, he finds his bags packed and outside the door. His wife has been joined by her rough-trade lover and their marriage is over. Desperate, he knows of nowhere else to go but to the address Robert has given him...

Five days later, the sedate and well-meaning Marcus finds himself swept into a Roman orgy of Bacchanalian proportions when Robert arranges a fancy-dress party in the apartment. He wants to introduce Marcus to his friends. Marcus has just befriended a beautiful, sucidal Danish girl Anita, and they have finished up in bed together. Robert mischievously confirms Anita's initial misunderstanding that he is Marcus' butler and that Marcus is, in fact, an incognito English aristocrat. She relishes the idea of the forthcoming "Butlers Party", and the ingenuous Marcus reluctantly goes along with both the deception and the party.

First to arrive is the egocentric Carlo, footman to the Conte Contini. who has brought in tow a thouroughly amoral, bisexual French siren, Brigitte. Marcus is dismayed. Several years previously, he had a brief affair with the callous and self-seeking Brigitte. She broke his heart and left lasting scars. Anita is equally dismayed to see Carlo, and seems determined to avoid being recognised. But why? Her background remains a mystery to both Marcus and Robert, as Carlo's lethal cocktails begin to take their effect...

The folowing day, everyone has to come to terms with what they got up to, the butler/aristocrat deception provokes unexpected reactions, and when Count Sverker von Knorring, a Swedish baron, arrives to collect his errant wife, Anita, he himself is in for an unpleasant surprise.

Trama

Roma 1969. Due inglesi, un gay (Robert) ed un eterosessuale (Marcus) sono in vacanza separatamente nella Città Eterna. Le loro strade si incrociano drammaticamente una sera tardi quando Marcus, da sempre Buon Samaritano, salva l'imprudente Robert da un'aggressione. Essi realizzano all'improvviso che hanno frequentato la stessa scuola elementare e Robert insiste nel dare a Macus l'indirizzo dell'appartamento dove risiede.

Marcus non ha l'intenzione di rivedere Robert. Infatti, egli ha attraversato un momento difficile con sua moglie e l'ha portata a Roma per una seconda luna di miele. Tuttavia, questa non si concretizzerà. Egli ha trascorso il primo giorno alla Convenzione Internazionale del Buon Samaritano e quando torna nell'appartamento che hanno preso in affitto, trova le proprie valigie fuori dalla porta. Sua moglie è stata raggiunta dal suo amante e il loro matrimonio è finito. Disperato, non sa dove andare se non all'indirizzo lasciatogli da Robert...

Cinque giorni dopo, il pacato e ben pensante Marcus, si ritrova nel mezzo di un'orgia romana di proporzioni simili ai Baccanali. Robert organizza una festa in maschera nell'appartamento. Vuole presentare Marcus ai suoi amici. Marcus ha appena fatto amicizia con una bellissima fatale ragazza danese, Anita, con la quale finisce a letto. Robert conferma maliziosamente il malinteso iniziale di Anita, la quale crede che Robert è il maggiordomo di Marcus e che Marcus è di fatti un aristocratico inglese in incognito....Ella gode all'idea della prossima "Festa dei Maggiordomi", e l'ingenuo Marcus accetta riluttante sia l'inganno sia la festa.

Il primo ad arrivare è l'egocentrico Carlo, domestico del Conte Contini, il quale è venuto con una sirena francese bisessuale e amorale Brigitte. Marcus è costernato. Molti anni prima, aveva avuto una breve relazione con l'insensibile ed egoista Brigitte. Ella aveva spezzato il suo cuore e causato feritee ancora aperte. Anita è ugualmente costernata nel vedere Carlo e sembra determinata a non essere riconosciuta. Ma perchè? Il suo passato resta un mistero sia per Marcus che per Robert, quando i cocktails letali di Carlo iniziano a fare effetto...

Il giorno dopo, ognuno deve fare i conti con quello che hanno seminato, l'inganno maggiordomo/aristocratico provoca reazioni inaspettate e, quando il Conte Sverker von Knorring, un nobile svedese, arriva per recuperare sua moglie girovaga, Anita, troverà anch'egli una spiacevole sorpresa.
